Refried Beans
Ingredients
1 can refried beans (pinto or black)
1–2 tbsp fat: lard, bacon fat, butter, or neutral oil
2–4 tbsp liquid: water, broth, or milk
Salt (to taste)
½ tsp cumin
¼–½ tsp chili powder or smoked paprika
1 small garlic clove, finely minced (or ¼ tsp garlic powder)
Steps
Heat fat in a small saucepan over medium-low.
If using garlic, cook it 30 seconds until fragrant (don’t brown).
Add beans and stir to coat in fat.
Add liquid a tablespoon at a time until creamy.
Simmer gently 5–10 minutes, stirring often.
Taste and salt at the end.
