Refried Beans

Ingredients

  • 1 can refried beans (pinto or black)
  • 1–2 tbsp fat: lard, bacon fat, butter, or neutral oil
  • 2–4 tbsp liquid: water, broth, or milk
  • Salt (to taste)
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ¼–½ tsp chili powder or smoked paprika
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced (or ¼ tsp garlic powder)

Steps

  1. Heat fat in a small saucepan over medium-low.
  2. If using garlic, cook it 30 seconds until fragrant (don’t brown).
  3. Add beans and stir to coat in fat.
  4. Add liquid a tablespoon at a time until creamy.
  5. Simmer gently 5–10 minutes, stirring often.
  6. Taste and salt at the end.
